PERFECT: A Conversation with the Venezuelan Middle Class about Female Beauty and Breast Implants
Venezuela is known throughout the world for its beauty queens. The country’s national identity is rooted in its success in international beauty pageants and the physical allure of its women. In order to meet stringent beauty standards, however, women—those who can afford it—often turn to plastic surgery as a way to enhance not only their appearance but their self-esteem.
I was born and raised in Venezuela, and during my regular visits back home I have grown more and more aware of the increasing use of plastic surgery, especially breast implants. In this, my first documentary, I attempt to understand this phenomenon by interviewing 13 middle-class Venezuelan women and men about their views on the subject, allowing Venezuelans themselves to question and explore their perceptions of plastic surgery.
